Reflections of 9/11/2001… #NeverForget

As the stories and images from 9/11 fill the airwaves we reflect upon not only the events of that day but how those events touched each of our lives in some way. Each and every one of us was affected in some way and each of us has a personal story about that day…. #NeverForget

It was a beautiful sunny day in Chicago on September 11, 2001. I went out for a run and remember how the sun was playfully dancing on the grass, reflecting the crisp blue sky in the mirrored buildings and on the lake. Glancing up at the skyline and marveling at its magnificence I remember feeling happy yet at the same time, there was this nagging feeling I had to get home….

I cut my run short that morning. When I got home, I went into the kitchen ignoring the beeping of my answering machine, grabbed a cup of coffee and came back into the living room where I had left the TV on before I left. Charlie Gibson was on Good Morning America showing a clip of a plane hitting the first  World Trade Center building. I thought they were showing a trailer for a new movie coming out. “Are you kidding?” I thought, “Who would make a movie like that?”

In this case, truth is clearly more horrible than fiction. I sat down and watched live as the second plane hit. I went completely numb! This was no movie! It was happening and happening NOW! I sat in stunned silence watching the events in New York, DC & Pennsylvania unfold. Yes, I remember that morning clearly even 10 years later and I’m sure I’m not the only one. All over the world people came together. There was an outpouring of love and it seemed for a moment the world came together as a family.

We honor  the victims, survivors and everyone who rose in service on that day and in the days to follow.  Our heroes are the firefighters and police who went well beyond the call of duty to save lives. Many of them made the greatest sacrifice…their lives. We feel connected in some way as Americans and it does not matter if we personally knew anyone involved.

We grieve and wrap our arms around all who were directly affected yet who among us was not affected? ALL of us were affected and it is time to put aside our differences and wrap our arms around each other. It is time to stand tall and not turn a deaf ear when we hear stories of terrorism “someplace else in the world” because “someplace else” was New York in 2001. On that day in 2001 we were a family, grieving together, mourning together and watching a real life horror story.

Let us honor and say a prayer for those who died senselessly at the hands of terrorists.  Say a prayer and send love and light to those who lost family friends and co-workers. Let us thank and honor those in law enforcement, the Fire Department, the Military and anyone else who stepped up to go beyond the call of duty for their contributions and sacrifice on that day and since that day. It is time to embrace our loved ones, teach tolerance and love and pray for PEACE ON EARTH. ~Shine Your Light Debbie

Asking for a Sign: Message Received on 37th Street.

Empire State Building NYC
Empire State Building

Everything is energy and all things that will come to pass do so in the spiritual realm before they manifest in the physical. So how do we know the spiritual inner work we are doing is in motion? How do we know if it’s working? ASK FOR A SIGN!

Whether it’s finding your space, creating something new or you simply have a question you want answered, before doing major healing work ask for a message to manifest in the physical.

My personal request usually goes something like “Dear Universe, Please give me a clear message that what I’m doing is working and please make it SO obvious I won’t miss it!” In this case, I asked and received more than I could have imagined!

Message Received on 37th Street!

I was recently extended an invitation to teach a meditation workshop to top-level executive business women in New York City as a part of an innovative business leadership initiative called Breaking Glass. (Remember the name because it directly relates to the “sign” I received.)

My offering for the Breaking Glass Series was Creative Solutions for Clearing Limits. I’d never been to New York so this was truly an exciting opportunity. A new business leadership workshop in the Big Apple! What more could I ask for?

Since the workshop was about clearing limits I definitely had to clear a few limits of my own to teach it. The business aspect alone was daunting. How do you bring meditation to already successful women business leaders? After my first “deer in the headlights, can I do this?” feeling, I grounded and set to work putting together a program.

As with all my energy work, prior to the event, I asked for a sign to show me that it not only was working for the attendees but for myself as well.

The Answer to “Was the Workshop Effective?”

The last night in New York the organizer of the event and I were on our way back to the hotel after dinner and instead of heading to the room we decided to go for a celebratory nightcap. We walked into the bar next to our hotel only to be told they just requested “last call” but the rooftop bar was open. Truth be told if we’d know there was a rooftop bar we would have gone there in the first place so up we went.

The bar had a very cool atrium type (glass) ceiling. Other than what was blocked by the ceiling support beams you could see the New York city skyline through the glass. As we were relaxing and celebrating the success of our combined and individual New York events over a glass of Prosecco the organizer, who also participated in the workshop, told me she had received a letter that day hiring her as an independent consultant to analyze and oversee a large upcoming conference. In many ways this was a dream come true for her. Her emotions ran free and tears started to flow as she (and I) embraced what happened within 24 hours of the workshop.

With tears of joy (for her) in my eyes,  I looked up and saw they were opening the ceiling of the atrium to the night sky. THEY LITERALLY MOVED THE GLASS CEILING! Right in front of us was the lit up Empire State Building against a night sky filled with stars! It was one of the most breathtaking sites I’ve ever seen. The moment was more powerful than I could have imagined. There I was, in New York with the amazing woman who  brought me there, celebrating clearing limits under a limitless night sky with the Empire State Building’s antennae spires pointing to the cosmos. I will also add, the picture I took doesn’t do it justice.

Coincidence? I don’t think so. Too many things had to happen to get us to that very place at that very moment. Every decision we made that night lead us to see what we needed to see to acknowledge our journey. It showed us there are no limits because we can simply clear them. Move them aside. Release them.

The message was loud and clear, acknowledged and received. Although the results of the workshop are still unfolding, the sign I asked for showed itself in grand fashion. I call this, for lack of a better word, a miracle but perhaps the miracle on 37th street was no miracle at all. Perhaps it was simply showing us there are no limits except for the ones we hold on to.

Keep doing the inner work you’re doing. Ask for a sign that it’s working even if the true results take time to manifest. Everything is energy. There are limitless possibilities and yes, there are signs that will show you in bright lights there are miracles yet to unfold.~Shine Your Light Debbie
