Please EXcuse the exCuse’!

How many times in your life have you asked someone to excuse you? How many times have you found yourself making an excuse for yourself or someone else?

Asking to be excused is a polite way of asking to be ‘released’ from a requirement.

A few examples: when you were in school and needed to be excused from class, you brought a note from your parents. Others are when you excuse yourself for bumping into someone or you are trying to get someone’s attention when they are doing something else.

What about the other definitions? The english language  is tricky if it is not your mother tongue but it IS interesting that the same word is used to pardon or release someone (or yourself) from blame as well as to offer a “reason” for something you cannot or choose not to do.

How many times a day do you make an excuse or excuse yourself?

Who or what are you exactly excusing and to whom? Are you somehow justifying  or rationalizing something to yourself in the process? Do you find yourself making excuses for someone else? More importantly are you being truthful when you are asking to be excused or are you simply making an excuse?

When you take ownership of the things you do or say there is no need for an excuse! Ownership means taking responsibility for your actions, words, and choices and how they may have affected someone else or possibly even how the excuses (or excusing yourself) affects your life.

Being polite is not just wonderful, it’s the right thing to do. Of course we try to be polite with each other but it’s a completely different energy when we ‘make excuses’  to assign blame,  or we choose not to take ownership of a decision that we (or someone else) has consciously or unconsciously made.

Oh yes. We not only make excuses for ourselves but we make excuses for others and sometimes we do this to assign blame or avoid the truth. When we make excuses for others we are, at some level, healing them but that, my friends, is a subject for another post.

Take a deep dive into “why”!

Don’t ask why, explore why. Exploring WHY you choose a particular word,  an action (or inaction), or why you made a certain choice leads you to learning more about yourself.

Taking an inner journey to explore the “why” opens the door to forgiveness and change.

What you notice in self-exploration is not to be judged. What you did or didn’t do in the past is probably not how you would handle it now. The important steps to this are to see what you see. Acknowledge what you see. Own what you see. Forgive yourself. Taking ownership has a great deal of freedom that comes along with it.

Every thought, deed or action has a learning experience tied to it. Your awareness and ownership of the choices you make (or made) can lead you on an interesting journey of the soul. You may even find that the choices you made in the past were laid on a foundation of programming built by someone else. If that’s the case, it’s time to build your own house on a foundation of ownership and truth.

This is not about being right or wrong in a situation. It’s about owning your choices and taking responsibility for them. If you make a mistake own it and learn from it. Clear the energy. Clear the guilt. Forgive yourself. Once the light of awareness  illuminates an excuse consider it an opportunity to learn and heal.

So please excuse the excuse! Take ownership of your life and stop making excuses! If you find yourself making excuses for someone else in your life forgive them for their lack of awareness. If you make excuses for yourself, forgive yourself.

YOU have the power to transform your life. You have the power to build a foundation without the need to make excuses. If you don’t want to start now, what’s your excuse? ~Shine Your Light Debbie

The Journey of a Snowflake: Perfectly Imperfect

SnowflakesI am convinced the world today is more “complicated” than ever.

As we try to separate fact from fiction and real news from fake news we may find ourselves at odds with those who we, for the most part, agree with.

We may want the same things but don’t agree on how best to get there. When this happens it is time to remember there doesn’t have to be a “right” because what’s “right” for you, may not be what’s “right” for me.

The truth is we all have an opportunity to arrive at a “shared destination” even though we choose a different path to get there…..

“We have all heard that no two snowflakes are alike. Each snowflake takes the perfect form for the maximum efficiency and effectiveness for its journey. And while the universal force of gravity gives them a shared destination, the expansive space in the air gives each snowflake the opportunity to take their own path. They are on the same journey, but each takes a different path.

Along this gravity-driven journey, some snowflakes collide and damage each other, some collide and join together, some are influenced by wind… there are so many transitions and changes that take place along the journey of the snowflake. But, no matter what the transition, the snowflake always finds itself perfectly shaped for its journey.

I find parallels in nature to be a beautiful reflection of grand orchestration. One of these parallels is of snowflakes and us. We, too, are all headed in the same direction. We are being driven by a universal force to the same destination.

We are all individuals taking different journeys and along our journey, we sometimes bump into each other, we cross paths, we become altered… we take different physical forms. But at all times we too are 100% perfectly imperfect. At every given moment we are absolutely perfect for what is required for our journey.

I’m not perfect for your journey and you’re not perfect for my journey, but I’m perfect for my journey and you’re perfect for your journey. We’re heading to the same place, we’re taking different routes, but we’re both exactly perfect the way we are.

Think of what understanding this great orchestration could mean for relationships. Imagine interacting with others knowing that they too each share this parallel with the snowflake. Like you, they are headed to the same place and no matter what they may appear like to you, they have taken the perfect form for their journey. How strong our relationships would be if we could see and respect that we are all perfectly imperfect for our journey.”~Steve Maraboli

The important thing to remember as we move towards the same or similar goals is this; A single snowflake is considered a flurry. Snowflakes in agreement with a quiet winter night fall gently to cover the ground in a blanket of beauty. Snowflakes in agreement with the wind cause a blizzard and snowflakes who stick together in all their uniqueness can be the cause of an avalanche.

It’s also important to remember that anytime we disagree in resistance to something, we cause separation. If the goal is indeed unity the first thing we should do is to unite with ourselves; to embrace the parts which are perfectly imperfect.

Let us agree to disagree on how to get there and respect there are different paths. Recognize you are perfectly imperfect and know (and respect) that each of us has taken the perfect form for our journey.~Shine Your Light Debbie

Eclipse * Comet * Full Moon Trifecta!

comet-jpg__800x600_q85_cropAn Eclipse, a Comet and Full Moon walk into a celestial bar…

The air is charged as we approach a weekend of energy events this weekend. This is truly a “trifecta” for spiritual seekers and awakening souls!

As with all astrological events we can use the powerful and exciting energies to help us on our journey.

Eclipse

Starting at 5:34 P.M. eastern time, people along the east coast will be able to see a penumbral lunar eclipse, when the sun, moon and earth all align. (via Weather.com). In this case there will be a subtle “overshadowing” of the moon. Lunar eclipses signify a time of great change and upheaval. Eclipses put us on the ‘right’ path as they illuminate truth and “eclipse out” that which no longer serves us.

“Eclipses shine the bright light of truth to the part of your life that is touched by the eclipse. Most of the time, eclipses act as brilliant illuminators, revealing a condition that you were unaware existed.”~Susan Miller

We are already feeling the effects of the eclipse so find some amusement, sit back and watch events as they unfold. Sometimes, we know that we are meant to make a change but we aren’t sure what to do. Allow the energies during an eclipse to help you.

Full Moon

Full Moons rule our emotions and pour down a tremendous amount of energy. Whatever is going on in our world will be greatly amplified. When we welcome the powerful lunar energies (instead of resisting them) we can use them to clear deeply stuck energy and emotions.

During the time of a Full Moon it is appropriate to celebrate life and light and to be mindful of all that we have, and all that we have created. It is a time to be curious, to open our hearts, count our blessings and feel the connection we have with ourselves and others.

Combining the energy of the Eclipse with that of the Full Moon, we have an opportunity to embrace and accept our truths as we release anything that was hidden.

Comet 45P

The energy of a comet affects us in many ways. A comet is formed by dust (earth element), ice (water element) and gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide (air element) in the ancient, distant region. Then they are given energy when they pass the sun (fire element), thawing and releasing the frozen air.

Comets symbolize frozen or stuck energy deep in the abyss of our consciousness such as suppressed emotions or fear. As they warm, they release toxic gases. So too, we are able to release toxic thoughts and the more we release, the more we are able to infuse a new zest for life.

Comets re-set the energy. They inspire new thoughts and new ideas. It’s interesting to note that the Chinese refer to comets as ‘the broom star’. Although they consider them ‘bad luck’ don’t forget that brooms are for cleaning and sweeping away debris. With a clean slate, we have room to bring in more wisdom.

According to Smithsonianmag.com Comet 45P has appeared to have lost it’s tail. That’s a lot of toxic energy release! As a planet (and personally) we have also released a lot of toxic energy. We are clearly coming to an end of an era but we are also bringing in wisdom and light as we birth new thoughts and ideas.

What a wonderful time we will have this weekend as we drink from the cosmic soup to re-boot and recharge. Be sure to pay a little extra attention to your mind, body and spirit. The energy is super-charged so you might need a little extra time in meditation, or extra rest. Give your body what it needs. Happy Healing!~Shine Your Light Debbie

Who Are You? (From the Inside Out)

dreamerImagine a world where we are more interested in learning about ourselves and others from the inside out.

A world where we are curious and aware of our heart’s desire and in turn lit up by knowing another heart’s desire.

“It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain!

I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it, or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul; if you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty even when it’s not pretty, every day,and if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes!”

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up, after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.” ~Oriah Mountain Dreamer

What is your dream? What does your heart desire? What inspires you? What are you curious about? What lights up your soul? I want to know these things about you! Do you know the answers for yourself? If not, no time like the present to ask yourself those questions.

Go within and re-introduce yourself to YOU. Connect with your inner light. Be curious and by all means…Shine Your Light!~Debbie

Energy Work: The reward outweighs the risk

Energy Work: It’s messy…and totally worth it!

Energy Work: The reward outweighs the risk“What are you going to do? Everything, is my guess. It will be a little messy, but embrace the mess. It will be complicated, but rejoice in the complications.”~Nora Ephron

Energy Work is Messy

Those who have chosen a healing path know that doing energy work is not glamorous. It’s just the opposite. It’s messy, extremely painful (at times) and the more you uncover the ‘truth’ of who you are, the more you begin to see clearly why and how things unfolded in the past.

One of the hardest pieces to wrap our heads around is when we finally open our psychic eyes to see how we co-created particular, and often painful, situations in our past. It isn’t an easy thing to see the truth because we must face the fact that at the time we (probably) knew or sensed something was off but didn’t listen to our inner voice. Hindsight at it’s finest. Oh yes, things seem to get ‘complicated’ and messy.

There’s no mistake I used the word ‘seem’ to describe the chaos that usually ensues once we discover that perhaps what we were noticing was correct! Things aren’t really complicated; they’re just painful. When we open up to truth our mind will go in a thousand different directions to think about anything and everything other than the pain we are about to feel when we open Pandora’s box. However, with acceptance of what was and loving ourselves in the present we WILL get through it.

Have you ever wondered why painful situation from the past seem to hold our attention as if a vice-grip has them firmly in place? It happens because they are “super-charged” with energy. If we don’t let go of past experiences we begin fueling or feeding the memory but here’s the thing, memories are illusions. They are pictures in our mind and the more we feed them with our present-time energy the bigger they become and the bigger they become, the farther away from the truth they are.

Embellishing expands the illusion

The more we “feed” or embellish our pictures the easier it is to get stuck. The reason it happens is because our ego minds take hold and act as defense mechanisms. Of course we don’t do this consciously but conscious or unconscious, the fact remains, the more we dwell in the past, the more we embellish and give power to the illusion and the less of our energy we have in the present for creating.

“And this mess is so big
And so deep and so tall,
We cannot pick it up.
There is no way at all!”
~Dr. Seuss

Deep energy work isn’t always smooth and graceful. For the most part we are not going to do one or two meditations and wake up without a care in the world. I know we all want it to be that way but it’s a process. A peeling back of the layers. It is a process of showing up as we are. It is a process of loving ourselves so much that we go beyond the fear of being heard, seen and vulnerable. To show up as we are, not who others want us to be.

It’s a risk to show up because when we do this work, those around us may not be comfortable with the changes we’re making. We also may see the mess as so big, deep and tall we don’t even want to attempt to clear it out.

Here’s where the reward far outweighs the risk because this is where we connect at such a deep level with ourselves there’s no going back.

“Vulnerability is not weakness, and the uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure we face every day are not optional. Our only choice is a question of engagement. Our willingness to own and engage with our vulnerability determines the depth of our courage and the clarity of our purpose; the level to which we protect ourselves from being vulnerable is a measure of our fear and disconnection.”~Brené Brown

It’s takes courage to enter the realm of our own psyche. It takes courage to look; to see. It takes courage to accept and accept responsibility for what we have co-created by our lack of awareness or non-acceptance of past experiences.

Yes, it gets messy. Yes, there is a possibility you will feel crazy or out of control and yes, there is the possibility that your growth period will be painful BUT…. there is also a greater potential for healing and transformation.

There is greater potential for growth and expansion and FOR SURE you will be clearing a space for love, and truth and more of YOU to be present…in the present. What a gift!~Shine Your Light Debbie

DECLARE YOUR INDEPENDENCE!

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.

About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”~Rob Siltanen

All of us have certain inalienable rights. Each of us is an individual. We have different thoughts, vibrations, and goals. Each of us have the right to create something of our choosing. It’s a beautiful concept that we are all one, because we are, but at the same time our human experience allows us to be  independent thinkers and creators. The creators, yes sometimes they are called the crazy ones or misfits, are the ones who forge their own path for the good of all.

If we didn’t have these creators and independent thinkers the internet would not exist. We would not have amazing books to read, rockets to the moon, cars, or even some of the things we may take for granted like electricity, telephones or running water in our homes.

We came here this lifetime to learn but also to allow others to learn from us. There are energies that we tap into which are part of the universe and the very earth itself. However, when you become dependent on someone or something outside of you in order to walk your path, it is not YOUR path! You have every right to embark upon the path you choose. This is about you declaring your right to be here. Your right to create. To add to whole.

Yes, we can swim in the sea of universal consciousness and allow those waters to flow through us but each of us has an individual consciousness and very unique vibration. It is up to each of us as individuals to choose (or not choose) how to live our lives.

If you are reading this, you have a body and it is your supreme right to make your own choices. You have the right to follow your dreams! You have the right to find what is true for you. You have the right to choose happiness. You have the right to be who you are and you certainly have the right to live and make conscious choices!

So in the tradition of the US Constitution preamble, declare YOUR independence!

“I (insert your name), in order to form a more perfect union with mind, body & spirit establish justice, insure personal tranquility, provide for happiness, promote and secure the blessings of freedom toward myself & others, do hereby declare that I have a right and deserve to live a conscious life filled with love, truth and infinite abundance.”

No one knows better than you what’s best for you so declare yourself! You have a right to your knowledge; your ability to see and communicate and listen to your inner voice. You have the right to create a beautiful life! You have the right to love and do what feels good. You have the right to create your dreams.

You have the right to have and express your emotions! You have the right to use ALL your abilities! Own who you are as a spiritual being in a body. Own that you have a right to be here and you have a lot to offer!  Be who you truly are in thought, in deed and how your live your life.

Will you be one of the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels or the troublemakers that changes and shapes the world in the days to come? If so, declare your independence and….~Shine Your Light Debbie

Explore the Light not the Darkness…

Exploring the light“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”~Francis of Assisi

All too often we choose to explore the darkness instead of the light.

Perhaps you just read that and said ‘oh no, not me’ and if that’s truly the case I applaud you because I do it all the time…. maybe it’s just me?

Here’s what I mean by exploring the darkness; Those times when you blame someone else without forgiving. Those times you ask why me? Those times you decide someone is doing something to you and you try to push them out.

Those times someone triggers you and instead of considering it a gift of healing and releasing the energy from your space, you punish them. Those times you decide to label the dark side of you as who you are i.e. looking inward to see why you’re depressed, anxious, fearful, invalidated.

If at any point you have”tried” to let go or been stuck in darkness, blaming others or punishing yourself you are exploring the darkness. When we focus on the darkness and continually ask “why” we are in effort and resistance. Each and every time we ask “why” we are looking at darkness straight on.

When was the last time you explored your light? You know, all those areas you are validated, certain, joyful and magnificent? We seem to spend more time looking at what’s wrong with us and the world than what’s right!

I was recently at dinner with 5 amazing women. It was suggested we go around the table and state out loud why each of us is a phenomenal woman. This suggestion prompted a reading of Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman before we started going around the table.

What I found most interesting was how difficult it was (for all of us) to state out loud what makes us phenomenal BUT I’ll bet you a dime for dollar each of us could tell you what we feel is ‘wrong’ with us without hesitation. Yes, we are all eager, and oddly comfortable, exploring, and talking about, our darkness.

For whatever reason, we humans find comfort in constantly trying to figure out what’s wrong with us instead of looking at what’s right! Why are we so afraid of exposing our own light? Is it some great mystery (we think) lies in the darkness instead?

It’s interesting to note that at some point choosing to explore the darkness changes from choice to becoming a habit; AND because we’re so busy exploring the dark, we are no longer AWARE. We are bumping into walls, wandering down dark corridors and wondering why we can’t see.

We can’t see because we’re fumbling around in the dark trying to force the light in. You see where I’m going with this? Instead of feeling around in the dark constantly talking about the darkness whether it be within you or outside of you, turn on the light! Ignite the match. Light the torch!

The moment we light our torch to see the (limiting) cave we’re in, we are no longer in darkness. The light grows and even if it casts shadows, we can still see! We only need to shine a little teeny light to begin to begin our exploration. Most of the time, we’re just afraid of what we’ll find in the dark yet we seem not to consider the BEAUTY and grandeur we might discover in the light.

The way I see it, once we choose to see (yes it is a choice) and we begin exploring and validating our light, it grows. Exploring the light is about you “becoming” all you are by seeing and accepting who you are. Right now, state out loud one thing that makes you amazing, phenomenal, magnificent.

See how you feel as you are saying it then state out loud a second thing then a third and a fourth. Accept your light and allow it to grow. Take time to explore and validate your light each day. Allow the darkness to fall away and take notice of the light in others. This is how you transform and create change in yourself and in the world!

Consider the possibility it is not the dark but the light you are afraid of. Decide to explore the light. Your light. See yourself as the phenomenal, divine and infinite soul that you are. See it. Embrace it. Own it. Change the world~Shine Your Light Debbie

The Uncomfortable Truth about Truth.

SetyourselffreeAmandaCass“We swallow greedily any lie that flatters us, but we sip only little by little at a truth we find bitter.”~Denis Diderot

We seek the truth but how often do we choose to ignore it because we didn’t like the answer? “Truth” is more like the unfitted sheet we struggle to fold neatly. More often than not, the truth is a messy tangled web because there’s not necessarily one “truth”.

The truth is beautiful and freeing yet sometimes feels like a terrible thing. It is something to be honored and respected but sometimes, we close our eyes and believe what we want to believe despite the truth.

Sometimes uncovering the lies to see, know and accept the truth hurts. It hurts because if someone has lied to you, it means at some level THEY didn’t want to own up to the truth. It also means you made decisions based on a lie.

Lies and omissions are almost ALWAYS about the person lying and those lies are not always malicious. I once had someone tell me they lied ‘out of compassion’; that it was the ‘kind’ thing to do.  At least that’s what he believed.

“But better to get hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie.”~ Khaled Hosseini

The reality is, a lie is born from fear. While there are some who lie because they have an agenda and are simply not nice people there are good and nice people who lie out of an underlying fear. Some lies are told because someone feels ‘less than’ or not worthy. They feel they must build themselves up in some way. Others are told because they fear the consequences that come with telling the truth and yet others are voiced out of embarrassment.

There’s the little white lie. The bold-faced lie. Lies of kindness, exaggeration, and broken promises. Lies of omission. Then there are the “programming” lies that say you have to do something a certain way. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of lies and reasons people rationalize lying but, whether conscious or unconscious, all of them have an impact on us.

The reality is, a lie comes directly from the ego mind. It serves as a false protection for the person telling the lie. A lie does not protect, it invalidates everyone involved. Lie=Living In Ego. When vibrating at truth and clearing the lies, be ready as the light illuminates the truth.

“Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.”~Friedrich Nietzsche

The truth about opening up to truth is that it’s uncomfortable. It’s messy. We don’t always see what we want to see. We don’t always want to know there was a lie in place. We believed what someone told us or what we wanted to see and when the truth comes out, our heads spin. We are potentially disappointed with ourselves and others and much of the time “truth” rocks the core of your being.

While truth can be uncomfortable the beauty is truth has no agenda. Truth is courageous. It is vulnerable and it will set you free. Would you rather live an honest life built upon a foundation of truth or a life built upon the foundation of lies?

The uncomfortable truth about truth is that we need to be just as brave and courageous to hear and receive the truth as we do speaking an uncomfortable truth to someone else. There are always two sides to the equation. BUT the real truth is, truth is not about ‘liking’ an answer or being in effort ‘seeking’ the truth.

In fact, it’s not about an answer at all! It’s about living your life, being who you are, unfettered by illusion. It’s about vibrating at truth, with awareness that a lie is simply an action or spoken word that comes from fear. Let go of the illusions. Let go of the lies. Forgive yourself and others for, at some level, being afraid, and just simply BE. WHO. YOU. ARE.~Shine Your Light Debbie

The Freedom to Choose Love

dewdropsThis is a guest post written by Chiron O’Keefe.

“Used to be I wore Rose-Colored Glasses. Had to, really. The early years were challenging, filled with drama, strife, agitation, and fear.

It would have destroyed my heart to recognize what my adult self would someday be able to properly assimilate. So I pretended, as many children do. A coping method. A means of emotional survival.

The Rose-Colored Glasses served my heart in many ways. I could *love* past the disdain or criticism or cruelty. I could pretend and close my eyes, and believe what served my heart even if it meant beginning a process of avoidance and self-deceit.

The souls who showed me affection and those who treated me poorly, both earned a fierce misguided loyalty. It was odd, looking back. Recognizing how I’d deliberately ignore bad behavior, or even pretend to myself that I didn’t notice.

Others fed into that. Guilt and Obligation were the go-to dynamic in my family and earliest friends. One trained me to never object by pushing my easiest button–my fear of being unkind. That one scolded me fiercely if I ever objected to being used or manipulated, if I dared to call her on her bad behavior or lies.

Objecting meant that I was Not Being Unconditionally Loving, which translates to “You’re a Bad Person.” In retrospect, it was classic psychological abuse, but what did I know? I wanted to love and so I did. My guilt filled in the empty slots where love belonged.

It took decades to allow myself to wake up. To gently remind myself that putting up with bad behavior is not kind but actually a form of enabling. All those buzz words to describe a simple truth: Letting others hurt or use you isn’t love. Guilt isn’t a natural response, and if that is the primary feeling, it’s not love. Unless you can say, “No,” instead of always feeling obligated to say, “Yes,” it’s not love.

However, those Rose-Colored Glasses served a valuable purpose. They taught me how to love. And without them, I felt colder and quite lonely. The world was starker in black and white, in lonely shades of grey.

It took years before I recognized the solution was not to discard them completely. Love is not a simple thing. People may hurt us and make mistakes, just as we hurt others. Sometimes the view is rosy, yet with a shade of another hue. All those colors require integration with an honest and compassionate heart. Sometimes love is messy, wild, like a tempestuous wave followed by a Chiron O'Keefe's photo.smooth pool of warmth and comfort.

There was one last step required. I had to make a promise to myself. I had to learn to say, “No.” To recognize that love is a choice, not an obligation. That promising to look for the best in another does not mean ignoring truth. So for me, having the ability to say “No,” meant I needn’t hide my eyes from what couldn’t be confronted. No longer did I have to don Rose-Colored Glasses to warm up a world of chill grey.

Today I view my world through a rainbow of emotions that stretch across my inner sky. The sunshine dances on the raindrops, and the occasional blustery storm encourages my inner trees to dance. I welcome all the colors of my emotions, grateful for my ability to feel without fear. I recognize my freedom to love or not as I choose. And in knowing I have this choice, I choose to love.”–Chiron O’Keefe

Exploring Your True Purpose

Exploring Your True Purpose“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”~Mark Twain

Many people go through their lives asking the age-old questions; why am I here, what is my purpose?

It is most certainly an important day when we receive the answer to those questions BUT have you considered the possibility that there is more than one “why”? What if instead of looking for your purpose, you discover you are already living it each day?

We are all many things to many people. We influence countless lives because when we touch someone’s life, they touch someone and then they touch someone and it goes on infinitely. Every word, deed and touch has purpose but we may never be fortunate enough to find out. It isn’t until we embrace and love ourselves that we open up to our true purpose.

We each have our roles to play.

You are powerful beyond measure whether you realize it or not but not one of us can physically be everywhere assisting every single person on the planet at any given moment. We each have our roles to play. As we embrace those roles we discover our purpose.

We may not receive an award for our role. Our “why” might not come in an epiphany. We can recognize how our role affects the lives of others by simply being present and aware. We have the opportunity to affect a life by looking into someone’s eyes and acknowledging their presence.

Several years ago I did a reading for a lovely woman. When I looked at her clairvoyantly I saw she was surrounded by dark energy that was not her own; Underneath was a bright, creative, colorful soul. She didn’t tell me much prior to our session other than she felt stuck and unable to create.  She also didn’t ask too many questions. By the end of our reading she was much brighter but I had no idea how the session dramatically affected her life.

A few years later I received an email thanking me. Her words, filled with heartfelt gratitude and enthusiasm, literally jumped off the page! In her email she said that prior to our session she felt isolated, alone and that she was contemplating suicide.

She said that during our session she felt safe for the first time in her life and in that safety she found hope. From the hope she reached out and found a therapist to help guide her through a very painful journey. The best part of this story is when she shared the joy of her “new” life.

She was happy in her marriage and felt love beyond “anything she could have imagined”. She got pregnant and gave birth to a gorgeous daughter and the demand for her art was off the charts! I read that letter with tears of joy and my heart grew as I realized a part of my purpose.

Who knows what this woman will go on to do? Who knows what her daughter will do? Who knows if her art will inspire another artist. Maybe she tells her story and gives someone else hope.

As we move through the world our purpose reveals itself in many ways. We will probably receive many ‘whys’ during our lifetime. We may not be able to put into words our exact purpose but we do know what feels good. Our purpose may be revealed in a series of seemingly small validations, or it might come all at once.

Not all of us are destined to write a Pulitzer Prize winning novel, receive an Academy Award, or discover a cure for cancer or AIDS BUT at some level we each play a very important supporting role so others can fulfill their purpose.

Who knows if the person you inspire will take that into the world to inspire someone else and so on. Who knows if you gave hope and saved a life as you smiled at the stranger on the street. Who knows if you brightened the day of the next Steven Hawking or Neil Armstrong.

Each of us has a purpose. Embrace your role and do what you do well. Do it from the heart. Do what you do best for THAT is your purpose!

While I’d like to think the “most” important day is when we find out why, each day is important. Live your life with purpose on purpose!~Shine Your Light Debbie
